Children's Literature

The cover makes a statement that this board book depicts children and their animal friends and that it takes a global look. Beautiful, full-color photographs show children in Africa, Asia, Australia and other parts of the world cuddling with dogs, billy goats, birds, kittens and guinea pigs. Other creatures don't really seem to fit the cuddly pet category—a large land tortoise and a goldfish. Otherwise, young toddlers won't mind and will be fascinated with the pictures of children enjoying a wide variety of pets. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Global Fund for Children to support community-based education programs around the world.

School Library Journal

PreS-An unsuccessful board book. Each spread has a photograph of a child with an animal (duck, dog, giant turtle, goat, fish, etc.) and a phrase relating to it: "Some animals have feathers [a bird is depicted]. Some have scales [fish]." As stated in the subtitle, the youngsters represent many different cultures, but nowhere are their nationalities listed. Some will be obvious to adults; the photograph of the blond girl with a koala bear most likely represents Australia. However, others are more generic, such as a redheaded girl cuddling a kitten. While the children in the photos are engaging, there's not much else here to celebrate.-Olga R. Kuharets, Broward County Libraries, Fort Lauderdale, FL Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
