Children's Literature

This is a hit or miss affair. Either a child will love the touch-and-feel patchwork of assorted sizes and shapes of slightly puffy plastic pasted over animal shapes, or not. This is not a textural experience as all of the plastic pieces are made of the same material in bright yellow, orange, green, blue, purple and magenta patched over a snake, fish, camel, polar bear, and an elephant. The surrounding illustrations of children looking through the jungle for animals are in colors as vivid as the plastic pieces. Sentences in jingle-style accompany the text. For instance, "They are a suntanned band in the dessert sand," and "In the jungle heat, they greet the snake they meet." The most pleasingly tactile animal is the snake that is wrapped around a tree trunk. Part of the "Squishy Shapes" series. 2003, Silver Dolphin, Ages 2 to 4.
