Read and learn different ways to word problems in math by applying the tips and following the basic steps in this "how-to" informational text. The four basic steps are introduced and described; a question and response format guides the reader within each step. With each word problem, the reader is taken through four basic steps leading to the answer of the math addition or subtraction problem. Different methods (i.e. writing equations, drawing pictures, or using models) are used to solve the problems. The theme of the word problems involves animals. The illustrations offer little support. The icons in the margin serve as reminders of the problem solving steps. Additional resources (books and websites) are listed in the back of the book and the publisher's website provides more addition and subtraction word problems that are downloadable. Students may require further support and practice in utilizing the different methods in solving word problems and they may need to use math manipulatives; in addition, assistance may be needed in learning how to utilize this format of informational text.
