Rosanne M. Cordell - Library Journal
Many books are available on antiques and collectibles, and Miller has contributed quite of few of them. Nonetheless, this one-volume treatment of the whole field is worth considering. Miller's knowledge and experience are clearly evident. Richly illustrated with high-quality photos, this volume packs significant amounts of information on what is considered antique or collectible, how various items are manufactured, how to evaluate them, what their current value is, and how to care for them. The volume begins with a brief description of major styles of antiques since the Middle Ages. Most of the book is divided into sections devoted to traditional areas of collecting (such as furniture, ceramics, rugs and carpets, or toys and games) or a few specific movements such as Arts and Crafts or Art Nouveau. Feature boxes address significant aspects, key facts, tips, manufacturing marks, or other special information on a topic. A section on where to buy antiques gives helpful hints and includes contact information for trade associations and major shows in Great Britain and the United States.
