Overview

Volume 1 of a two-volume reference that is intended to help maintain the momentum of scholarly interest in composer Anton Bruckner, and to provide a biography based primarily on available documents, particularly letters and critical reviews of his works during his lifetime. In the four chapters, Howie (music, U. of Manchester) discusses Bruckner at St. Florian (apprentice years, 1845-1855), in Linz (1856-1868), and in Vienna (the first ten years, 1868-1877). The book contains five reproductions of letters written by Bruckner. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
