Library Journal
This book's claim that it updates Pieter Jacobus Potgieter's Index to Literature on Race Relations in South Africa, 1910-1975 (G.K. Hall, 1979) and provides ``a broader and more in-depth coverage'' is not substantiated by its superficial presentation, which omits many of the major works produced in the period. No attempt is made to describe the method of identifying and selecting material. The Potgieter bibliography covers only books published through 1975. This volume does not begin its coverage until 1980, thus omitting much valuable material which appeared in the aftermath of the Soweto riots, such as Steve Biko's I Like What I Write ( LJ 2/15/79); Alex Callinicos's Southern Africa after Soweto (Pluto: S. & S., 1978; o.p.); and Gail M. Gerhart's Black Power in South Africa: The Evolution of an Ideology ( LJ 7/78). Pyatt includes brief articles from Newsweek , U.S. News and World Report, Chronicle of Higher Education, Reader's Digest, and South Africa Foundation News , but omits any reference at all to a major journal in the field, Journal of Southern African Studies . Such works as George Fredrickson's White Supremacy: A Comparative Study in American and South African History (LJ 12/15/80); Joseph Lelyveld's Move Your Shadow: South Africa Black and White (LJ 11/15/85); Thomas Karis and Gwendolen Carter's monumental four-volume work, From Protest to Challenge: A Documentary History of African Politics in South Africa, 1972-77 (Vol. 1, LJ 7/72; Vol. 3, LJ 7/77); and Lewis Gann's Why South Africa Will Survive: A Historical Analysis (St. Martin's, 1981) are also not referenced. The annotations add little if anything to the titles annotated. Not recommended.--Maidel Cason, Univ. of Delaware Lib., NewarkBooknews
