Gr 5-8-Interesting chronological contexts for global history. The four chapters in each book look at what was happening in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas at that volume's specified date. Both titles present information in a thought-provoking way, using scenarios to illustrate specific points. A few chapters begin with anecdotal stories or legends. Lengthy information boxes focus on one aspect of a topic, offering biographical profiles and recipes such as "Stuffed Dates," Roman style. However, there is some speculation in the books; for example, in 1200, the authors note that in certain Mayan ceremonies a child would be thrown in a well as a sacrifice to the gods. "No doubt it was a great honor-. But there must have been moments when the chosen child wished for- a longer life." There is no documentation to support this view. A relevant map opens each section, and the books are amply illustrated with good-quality, full-color photos and reproductions, most with detailed captions. These attractive and accessible titles will provide useful information for reports and be of interest to leisure readers.-Tracy Ansley, formerly at Cary Academy, NC Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.Book Details
