About the Author, Marc Brown

Two things suggest that Arthur, the loveable star of children s books and the PBS series, may not be so fictitious after all: 1) Kids are known to call Marc Brown s house looking for their bespectacled friend and 2) Brown s third grade class picture -- according to many, a dead-ringer for the aardvark himself.

From everyone's favorite aardvark comes the sweet story of a first kiss, as Arthur and all his fun and familiar friends appear in this Step into Reading book. The story begins when Muffy invites everyone to her birthday party. With a smile, Buster quietly informs Arthur that Francine plans to kiss Arthur at the party. And we all know Francine -- she's persistent! Arthur is determined to fight her off, or at least avoid any kissing games. He thinks he just might make it through the evening when Francine and Muffy play a little trick by distributing cards with the guests' names on them. Any girl holding a card with her own name on it, they say, has to kiss the boy holding a card with his own name. The catch is that the only names on the cards are "Francine" and "Arthur"! When it appears that Arthur can't possibly escape Francine's fast-approaching lips, D.W. appears, and she and Pal save the day.

The book features two full pages of peel-off stickers. One page includes stickers that match key blue words in the book. The other page allows young readers to write their own Arthur story about a visit to the aquarium.
