Overview

Close and Askew (both Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific U., Japan) examine the links between human rights, what they call the global human rights regime, and the Asia Pacific region. They characterize the global human rights regime as the product of culture and power, the result of competition among cultures or cultural representatives and entrepreneurs, and as created by northern Western governments and a pack of non-governmental organizations that have emerged from the same northern Western countries. Among their topics are regionalism and human rights, the constitutional debate in Japan over the political rights of non-nationals, and the Ainu as a case study of indigenous people of the region.
