Asia stretches from the Artic Ocean to the Red Sea and from the Pacific Ocean to the Ural Mountains, which divides Europe and Asia, making Asia by far the largest continent. Asia is also the continent with the largest country, the smallest country, the highest point, and the lowest point on Earth. Bordered on three sides by oceans and on the fourth side by Europe, nearly all of it lies north of the equator. Over fifty countries are found in Asia, among them the two most populous countries, China and India, with over one billion people each. Due to its size, Asia's terrain is very diverse, with deserts, mountains, steppes, and wooded areas found in different areas of the continent. Asia's relative proximity to Europe and Africa ensures that most native plants and animals can be found on other continents, though many native animals are unique to the continent, including the panda bear and the Komodo dragon. This brief look at the geography of Asia is inclusive and appropriate for a beginning look at Asia. The text is easy to understand and fully illustrated. Words appearing in bold throughout the text are defined in a glossary at the end of the text. Fully illustrated with color photos, only one political map and one physical map are provided. Also included are an index, an Asian almanac, important dates in Asia's history, and a list of sources for additional information. Part of the "Geography of the World Series." 2004, The Child's World, Ages 7 to 10.β Danielle Williams
