Children's Literature - Judy Katsh

In a noble effort, this book, a part of a "Mapping Our World" series, attempts to teach readers about Asia by having them simultaneously learn about maps and map reading. Studying maps may well be a good way to learn about places in our world, but this book doesn't make it happen. Mostly what happens is that each map presented (political, physical, linguistic, population...) is accompanied by general information about what can be learned from such a map; and then specific information about the continent is presented several pages later. The result is a persistent need to turn pages. The author suggests that readers compare maps. To do so, readers would have to look at pages 35 and 50 at the same time. While the maps' page numbers are supplied, it is not enough to make adequate comparison feasible or enjoyable. There are lots of better ways to learn about Asia, and about maps.
