School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- These books do not include clear diagrams or pictures showing each step in the process of creating a finished product. Nor do they indicate color schemes with representational pictures or labels. The two-color illustrations are simplistic to the point of crudeness; in most cases, readers are told to trace the design and then transfer the tracing. In Asian Crafts , the instructions are to dip a pointed paintbrush into black ink and ``experiment with how it feels to hold the brush. Make a few strokes with it.'' The next admonishment is to follow the illustrations in order, but no sequence is indicated. In Latin American and Caribbean Crafts , the directions for making a collage of strips of seven colors of tissue paper is illustrated in blue and white. No method for applying a polymer medium is given. While the tone and design are obviously for children, the books don't meet the needs of that audience because they lack simple directions and visual back-up. Many other crafts books are more faithful to cultures of these countries. --Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn,Book Details
