Overview
Spreen and Risser present a comprehensive, critical review of available methods for the assessment of aphasia and related disorders in adults and children. The authors explore test instruments and approaches that have been used traditionally for the diagnosis of aphasia, ranging from bedside screening and ratings, to tests of specific aspects of language, and to comprehensive and psychometrically standardized aphasia batteries. Coverage of other methods reflects newer trends, including the areas of functional communication, testing of bilingual patients, psycholinguistic approaches, and pragmatic and discourse-related aspects of language in everyday life. The authors also examine the expansion of language assessment to individuals with non-aphasic neurological disorders, such as patients with traumatic brain injury, lesions of the right hemisphere, the healthy elderly, and invidulas with dimentia. The final part discusses issues in general clinical practice, specifically questions of test selection and interpretation.

Purpose:The purpose of this book, as stated by the authors, is to introduce new clinicians in speech-language pathology and neuropsychology to the variety of diagnostic tools available. It is also considered a tool for upper level graduate coursework. These are worthy objectives and the authors have met them.
Audience:According to the authors, the target audience is new clinicians in speech-language pathology and neuropsychology, as well as students in upper level graduate coursework within these domains.
Features:The book is broken down both by various types of diagnostic tools as well as by disorder area. Areas covered include aphasia assessment as well as diagnostic materials for cognitive-linguistic populations. Pediatric and adult populations are addressed. The organization of the book is exceptional. It is clear and easy to manipulate. There are several tests (i.e., traumatic brain injury; right hemisphere tools) that seem to have inadequate information available. I was pleased to see that these tests were included, but I would have liked to have seen more information for clarification.
Assessment:The book is of high quality and will be very useful to the intended audiences. It is very helpful to have descriptions of such a number and variety of diagnostic tools within one text. To my knowledge, there are no other books available that are this encompassing.
