Synopsis

Everyone who's anyone will be at the Three Little Pigs' housewarming party. Goldilocks and Little Red Riding Hood have already marked it on their calendars. Unfortunately, so have the wolves those who have caused the Pigs to build their brick house in the first place! In this wonderfully creative book, Alma Flor Ada imagines what it would be like if a few beloved fairy tale characters were pen pals. Leslie Tryon's intricate and colorful illustrations make the unique epistolary format fun for young readers.

Gr 1-3The Hidden Forest’s denizens still have to deal with those pesky wolves. After settling into the brick house and deciding they are safe, the Three Little Pigs have invited all the major neighborhood players to a housewarming party. Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks have it on their calendars, so do Baby Bear and Peter Rabbit. But the wolves are ready, too. They have a spyglass, a purloined invitation, and a plan that includes a stew of any of the pigs’ guests they can catch. In this sequel toQuerido Pedrín (Atheneum, 1994), Ada continues with the epistolary style that makes both books entirely original and amusing. The voices of the correspondents come through loud and clear to create an amusing story whose humor is wry enough to appeal to older readers yet sufficiently obvious for younger children. Detailed and entrancing watercolors illustrate each letter. The sparkling Spanish translation captures all the nuance of the English original, and the rendition is clever enough to appeal to Spanish language students who are beginning to translate. It also works brilliantly as an introduction to epistolary style. Highly recommended for bookstores, libraries and language programs, alike.
