Overview

Gordon Millichap, M.D., F.R.C.P., a pediatric neurologist with more than 30 years experience in treating ADD children, is Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University Medical School, and Pediatric Neurologist at Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, USA. He was formerly pediatric neurologist at the Mayo Clinic. After receiving his M.D. degree from the University of London, Dr. Millichap held fellowships and teaching positions at many of the outstanding medical schools and hospitals in the United States, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Millichap has written and editted books on neurology, learning disabilities, epilepsy, and nutrition. He has over 150 articles in Professional journals, and he is editor of an international journal on pediatric neurology. He co-authored a book on dyslexia with his wife, Nancy; he has four sons.

Description: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent condition of childhood about which there are many theories as well as great research interest. This book provides an excellent introduction to this complex subject. The question and answer format is particularly easy to follow and it covers traditional and alternative approaches to treating these disorders.
Purpose: The author has brought together the results of many current research studies and his own extensive clinical experience to help the reader evaluate knowledge of the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of children with ADHD, learning disorders, seizures, tics, compulsions, and oppositional behavior.
Audience: Written for the concerned parent and informed layman as well as the teacher, student, psychologist, and pediatrician, this book will be particularly well-thumbed in a waiting room library. Students will appreciate the well-organized references at the end of each chapter.
Features: Many research studies are summarized to support the author's conclusions about causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of ADHD. Particularly useful are three chapters which help distinguish ADHD from co-morbid and related conditions. This book details and compares the medications used to treat ADHD and provides charts on dosage, side-effects, and duration of action of the different stimulant and other medications most commonly prescribed. Behavioral and educational interventions are covered in less detail and the discussion of learning disabilities is less comprehensive than that of ADHD. However, the chapter on diets and alternative treatments, including reviews of scientific studies of these approaches, is especially useful.
Assessment: The author has effectively summarized the current state of a field in which he is recognized as a pioneering authority. I can recommend this book to those seeking a comprehensive introduction to a complex disorder and also to experienced clinicians seeking to update their knowledge of the latest research studies.
