Australia lies entirely south of the equator and nearly 40% of Australia is covered in desert, making it one of the driest continents on Earth, though mountain ranges, grassy scrubland, and wet tropics can also be found. Most people live on the coast, and this is where most large cities can be found. Because of its distance from other land areas, Australia has many unique characteristics and is the only continent that is made up of only one country. Many native plant and animal species are found naturally only in Australia, including kangaroos, platypuses, and wallabies. Australia is also home to the Great Barrier Reef, covering over 180,000 square miles along Australia's northeast coast. Although this is only a brief look at Australia, the text is an adequate first look at the continent. The text is fully illustrated with full-color photos, but only two maps are provided. Also included are a glossary, an index, an Australian Almanac, important dates in Australian history, and additional sources to consult. Part of the "Geography of the World Series." 2004, Child's World, Ages 7 to 10.β Danielle Williams
