Although avalanches may seem remote and hard to imagine, this book brings them to life with powerful color photos and descriptive text. It explains what causes avalanches and how to try to survive one by moving one's body as if he/she were swimming. Slab avalanches and loose snow avalanches are two different types that are explained. Several famous avalanches are also mentioned, such as the Mount Rainier avalanche of 1981 and the Wellington avalanche of 1910. Avalanche predictions are covered as well as the tools and equipment that can help people survive or help to find those who were unfortunate enough to be buried in one. There is a glossary, a list of book references, a list of addresses, and a page on how to use a helpful Web site that has links to more information on avalanches. These links were chosen by this publisher's editors and are easy to use. This title is part of the "Natural Disasters" series. 2003, Capstone Press,
