Children's Literature - Judy Crowder

Very young or nonreaders are introduced to the watery world of barracudas in this book, part of the "Under the Sea" series. Colorful, clear, close-up photo illustrations accompany simple facts about these remarkable fishβ€”sizes, feeding behavior, how large and small barracuda differ (small swim in schools, large ones do not), how their large eyes and big teeth help them catch smaller fish, and how their fins and large tails enable them to swim efficiently in warm or cold waters. Especially interesting are the apt descriptions used to tell young readers about sizeβ€”small are as big as a pillow and large are as long as a bed. The book includes a simple glossary plus an index, age-appropriate Internet sites, and a short list of books to read more about these silvery fish. Consulting editor is Gail Saunders Smith, PhD. Another consultant is Ray Davis, Senior Vice President of Zoological Operations, Georgia Aquarium. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
