This book presents basic neuroanatomy in an atlas form combined with short text. After a minimal discussion of peripheral nervous system, functional neuroanatomy of the major sensory and motor pathways is described and illustrated with schematic drawings. Vascular anatomy and surface and cross-sectional anatomy of the brain and spinal cord are presented as a combination of photographs, drawings, and CT and MRI scans. This is the fifth edition; the fourth was published in 1991. The purpose is to promote the learning of neuroanatomy, meeting the needs of a range of students in medicine and allied professions inexpensively. This is an important area of study, and the book overall meets this objective. Intended for students at all levels, including undergraduates, students of paramedical programs, medical students, graduate students, and residents studying for board exams, it may not be sufficient for the latter as a single source. The author is a solid authority in neuroanatomy. The prominent feature of this book is the excellent illustrations, combining brain photographs with drawings and CT and MRI images, which facilitates study. The appearance of the book is pleasing, the index adequate and the references helpful. This is a very useful book that provides a good introduction to neuroanatomy. There are other books in neuroanatomy, and the changes since the previous edition were limited. However, the illustrations are excellent, facilitate learning, and make this book a valuable purchase for all students of neuroanatomy and a needed addition to a medical school library.
