Bear and his bug-eyed animal friends bundle up on a snowy day and head outside to play. When they build a snowman, Bear contributes all of his clothing to the cause—except his red long underwear. His friends’ declarations of approval appear in dialogue balloons: “You look super cool!” says Beaver. Luckily, there’s a pair of long underwear for everyone; including the snowman. Toddlers should continue to find Doodler’s lovably dim cartoon animals and deadpan humor—and, of course, the underwear theme—irresistible. Ages 4–up. (Nov.)

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner

"It's a snowy, blow-y day," and Bear makes the most of it with his lively, diverse group of friends, including Cougar, Skunk, Rabbit, Turtle, Beaver and "Hedgy." After their initial excitement at snow and hot cocoa wears off, Bear and his restless pals bundle up, then head outside to further the fun. As in most large groups, "Everyone wants to do something different." One searches for pine cones; a pair go sledding; another two make snow angels, and Bear builds a snowman whom the others decide looks cold—and is clearly in need of clothing. Bear obliges by generously donating his own to the cause. When he's stripped down to his long underwear (gasp!), he starts a fashion trend: all his buddies want a pair themselves! Luckily, he has enough for everyone—including the snowman. This is a cute story with fun illustrations that should have small kids turning the page and giggling. The only criticism is that it's difficult to figure out what one of the characters is supposed to be, and this could cause some frustration for both child and parent! Reviewer: Naomi Milliner

PreS-Gr 2—When the snow finally stops falling, Bear and his friends bundle up and go out to play. They make snow angels, catch snowflakes, sled, and have a snowball fight. When Bear builds a snowman, the friends agree that his creation needs something to keep him warm. The critters try mittens, a scarf, a hat, etc., but Bear ultimately decides he needs to give the snowman his red long underwear. The main text and dialogue balloons carry the story. The cartoon illustrations have a loose, silly feeling to them. The characters' large eyes roll expressively in their heads, adding visual humor to the funny text. This is a serviceable addition, but Jonathan London's Froggy Gets Dressed (Viking, 1992) is a stronger choice for a silly story about winter clothing.—Susan E.
