Beginning with the concept of a map, and the physical and political characteristics of the U.S., the atlas is then divided into six major sections based on the regions of the country: the Northeast, the Southeast, the Midwest, the West, the Southwest, and the Territories. Each state is featured in a two-page spread, with a map, fun facts, full color photographs, and basic information such as the capital, the largest city, and the state flag, flower, and bird. The inclusion of so much information could be overwhelming to emerging readers, but there are plenty of interesting illustrations to investigate when the text becomes too frustrating. Additional features include a spread on the District of Columbia, the United States at a Glance, a glossary, an index, and two-letter postal codes.
