Overview

Web application development skills are popular, as more and more Internet, intranet and extranet applications are demanded. This book is an introduction to the subject of developing web applications in a Microsoft environment - using the .NET framework, Visual Studio .NET, the C# language, and the IIS web server.

The book assumes some familiarity with C# and .NET, and uses this as a foundation for discovering the principles and practicalities of development in a web environment.

We begin with an examination of the web environment itself. We tackle topics closely related to the task of the subject of web application development in .NET - including web forms, data-driven applications, XML, state management, web services, performance improvement, security, effective debugging and exception-handling, and practicalities of deployment.

The book is examples-driven. Beginning at Chapter 3, we build a complete, working web application that demonstrates many of the concepts we discuss in the book, and that can be used as a basis for your own applications.

This book is targeted predominantly at two groups of readers:

  • Those who have completed a course in C# but have little or no experience in the world of developing for a web environment
  • Those who have been programming C# windows apps, but have yet to journey into the world of web development

For these readers, the book is intended to be an enabler. Its purpose is to get its readership up-and-running in the world of C# web development with the minimum of fuss by providing a broad, comprehensive, practical experience.
