Synopsis
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in its microscopic form is present in 60 percent of men over age 60. Many have a reduced quality of life, and surgical intervention is common. Kirby (urology, St. George's Hospital, London) and McConnell (urology, U. of Texas) describe the pathophysiology of BPH, its diagnosis, medical and surgical management, minimally invasive options, considerations in treatment decisions, and future trends. They provide useful addresses and a glossary. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This book reviews the pathophysiology and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is a second edition that follows the first edition by four years. The aim of this book is to review in a comprehensive and easily understood manner the basic science aspects of BPH and medical and surgical treatment intervention. It is an attempt to provide a comprehensive reference on the subject in a practical manner. The second edition was prompted by some of the recent changes in understanding and treatment of BPH, and the authors have attempted to incorporate up-to-date information. Although little progress or new knowledge about BPH occurred for many years, there has been an explosion of new information during the past decade, making a text of this nature quite useful. This book does not attempt an in-depth analysis of every aspect of BPH, but strives to incorporate practical material. This makes it a uniquely useful guide. The audience for the book is not clearly stated in the preface, but it would be useful to students, residents, or primary care doctors treating men with BPH. In addition, it has information of value to practicing urologists. The authors are bona fide experts. The greatest strength of this text is the quality and number of diagrams, tables, and illustrations. They nicely supplement the narrative portion of the text and promote understanding of the subject material. The references are not exhaustive, but they are pertinent and comprehensive. The generous use of color art enhances the overall appearance of the book as well as the quality of the illustrations. This is an excellent overall contribution because of its concise yet thorough coverage of the subjectmatter and the quality and quantity of the illustrations and tables.
