Children's Literature
As with many "find it" books, this one, too, will delight young children and put them in a "spooky" mood for Halloween. The rebus format involves the child in reading the text and will add to their enjoyment. The illustrations are colorful and filled with lots of monstrously funny pictures that children will love to discover. Based on the title of the book, I anticipated a long, challenging search for hidden items, but found myself somewhat disappointed when all of the items hidden as part of the scavenger hunt were found without much effort. As a result, this book is best suited to younger children who have not yet developed a sharp eye. Older children who are accustomed to the more intricate "find it" books may still find the book entertaining, despite the fact that it is not as challenging, since it also contains some activities, such as mazes, batty bats and other Halloween fun. 2000, Scholastic, $3.25. Ages 3 to 5. Reviewer: Emily Cook
