Overview

Ten years ago, Anne LaBastille found peace and solitude in the log cabin she built herself at Black Bear Lake. But as the years passed the outside world intruded in various ways: curious fans, after reading her best-selling book Woodswoman, tracked her down; land developers arrived; there was air and noise pollution and the damages of acid rain.

Beyond Black Bear Lake is the story of the author's decision to retreat farther and build a tiny cabin fashioned after Thoreau's Walden, of her life there with two German shepherds as companions, of the sustaining relationship that developed with a man as independent as herself, and of her renewed bond with nature.

After her bestselling book, Woodswoman, Anne LaBastille retreated even farther into the wilderness and built a tiny cabin fashioned after Thoreau's Walden. Her renewed bond with nature makes for another "eloquent, witty, and inspirational volume."--Booklist.

Library Journal

In the mid-70s, a young field biologist with a Ph.D. in wildlife ecology built her own cabin in the Adirondacks and in her sensitive account, Woodswoman ( LJ 5/1/76), discussed the virtues of living alone in the woods as compared with the stresses of city life. Before long, ``civilization'' had intruded and LaBastille moved deeper into the woods. In her new book she decribes the building of a second cabin, Thoreau II, at a cost of $138.38, and includes chapters on nature and environmental concerns, particularly the ravages of acid rain. Her eloquent message is straightforward and inspiring and echoes that of Thoreau himself``In wildness is the preservation of the world.'' Highly recommended for most libraries.
