Overview

Conventional wisdom refers to education as the pervasive cure for prejudice and intolerance. However, this book argues that, noble attempts by dedicated teachers aside, ethnocentrism and racism reflect individual predispositions and social forces beyond the reach of conventional pedagogy. Such sober conclusions do not diminish the importance of anti-racist education, but protect it from the romanticization of the well-intended. Beyond Multicultural Education re-examines the role of educational institutions in multicultural societies. The editor questions some assumptions regarding the homogeneity and intactness of cultural identifications of minorities underlying most studies in the area of multiculturalism and education and concludes that multiculturalism as a policy has focused on a reified, depoliticized and privatized conception of ethnicity: one which overemphasizes lifestyles and neglects ethnic inequalities. The educational implications of this decline of instrumental ethnicity in favor of symbolic ethnicity are highlighted. This book points to the need for constant re-definition of priorities in education for a multicultural society. Practitioners are offered more than practical advice, but points of orientation for shaping their own special needs.
