School Library Journal

PreS-- Very young children meet major Old Testament heroes and heroines in terms they can relate to: ``Noah built an ark. I can build lots of things.'' Some of the characters portray qualities worthy of children adopting: ``Rebecca was kind to animals. So am I.'' A large illustration of the Biblical character is framed with a small accompanying picture of a modern child performing an appropriate activity. Of the 11 figures chosen, four are women. The page layout is uncluttered, with crisp, colorful illustrations. The book has no specific denominational overtones, and offers positive role models to children too heavily bombarded with heroes of the popular culture cartoon variety. --Micki S. Nevett, Temple Beth Emeth Library, Albany, NY
