Library Journal
In this heavily illustrated guide to holy places, Gonen offers descriptions of 200 biblical sites and provides over 250 excellent pictures for locales in Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, the Holy Land, Italy, Jordan, Malta, Syria, and Turkey. As a result of the book's compactness, the reader may be overwhelmed at the sheer amount of information provided yet also disappointed that descriptions aren't more thorough. In addition, the book contains some scriptural inaccuracies (e.g., the statement that Jesus gave Peter the keys to the kingdom rather than promised the keys at Caesarea Philippi, which refers to the biblical book of Revelations). Although these shortcomings may lead some readers to question the seriousness of the book, it may still offer both actual and armchair travelers a quick overview of biblical sites. It should not, however, be the only book or the primary book that such travelers employ. Recommended for libraries with expansive travel sections.--David I.
