Gr 6 Up--This biography of the 42nd president details his difficult childhood, specifically adversities such as the death of his father before he was born and an abusive, alcoholic stepfather. The focus, however, is on Bill Clinton the politician--a career that has included wins, defeats, and surprising comebacks. Throughout the book, Kelly emphasizes the important role Hillary Rodham Clinton has played in her husband's success. The author provides a good balance between coverage of Clinton's achievements and problems. The scandals that have marred Clinton's presidency are considered, including the possibility of impeachment proceedings "if the [Lewinsky] story could be proved." Kelly follows the incidents through April 1, 1998. A useful book for reports.--Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
