Synopsis

Glial cells are commonly viewed as subordinate players to the functional requirements of neighbouring neurons—in normal as well as pathological conditions. These neuron-glial interactions are crucial for the development, maintenance, plasticity and repair of the nervous system. They are also dependent upon and/or influenced by interactions between glial cells themselves. This book provides a unique focus on structural, molecular and physiological aspects of glial-glial interactions in the nervous system and their significance for neuronal function, integrity, regeneration and repair. It emphasises the possibilities for modifying these interactions and the consequent opportunities for developing new therapies, which counteract neuronal injury and/or promote recovery from neurological disorders such as paraplegia and stroke.
