Overview

A comprehensive treatise on new developments in biotechnology, the authors of Biotechnology and Safety Assessment, 3e, bring readers an up-to-date review of food safety issues, pre-clinical safety and development of new foods and drugs, plant biotechnology, food allergies and safety assessment, and consumer benefits with regard to genetically modified food.

Tomorrow's foods will be obtained from genetically modified crops, offering consumers higher nutritional value and more of it. Our medications will be obtained through a variety of biotechnological procedures yielding more potent and specific medications for diseases and vaccines. In order to make this view of the future come to light, John A. Thomas and Roy L. Fuchs have updated their classic in order to keep readers one step ahead.

Written by internationally recognized molecular biologists, plant agronomists, microbiologists, toxicologists, nutritionists, and regulatory authorities, this third edition is an excellent and authoritative resource, making it a valuable resource to any biomedical library or scientific bookshelf.

Key Features
* Provides timely coverage on topics of agribiotechnology and biotherapeutics
* Describes the recent progress in genetically modified crops and their safety
* Presents an update of the newer developments in therapeutic agents
* Discusses role of genetically modified microorganisms in the development of new food products
* Outlines various global regulatory issues relating to GM crops
* Addresses environmental and ecological topics related to GM crops

Audience: Toxicologists, phamacologists, regulatory agency professionals, environmental scientists, and agricultural scientists.

Synopsis

This expanded, updated 3rd edition of Biotechnology and Safety Assessment includes a comprehensive contemporary review of two major areas of biotechnology — agribiotechnology and biotherapeutics. Topics covered include the safety assessment of genetically modified (GM) foods, their risk assessment, environmental impact and post-marketing surveillance. The area of biotherapeutics includes the pre-clinical safety assessment of interferons, cytokines, and new vaccines. Written by internationally recognized molecular biologists, plant agronomists, microbiologists, toxicologists, nutritionists and regulatory authorities, this book provides well-rounded coverage of the topic. This updated 3rd Edition is an excellent comprehensive and authoritative addition to any biomedical library or agricultural technical resource center.

From The Critics

Thomas (emeritus, U. of Texas Health Science Center) and Fuchs (director, Regulatory Science and Global Scientific Affairs at Monsanto Company) bring together 16 contributions written by 23 contributors, six of whom are affiliated with Monsanto, and most of the others, with academic research programs. The first edition of this work was published in 1993, and the second in 1999; it's not clear how much of the earlier editions are carried forward in this third edition, but according to the editors' preface, emphasis has shifted to global perspectives on the safety and commercialization of genetically modified crops and new therapeutic agents. Though the conclusions for each contribution seem to promote careful, thoughtful testing and measurement of environmental and health implications, controversial aspects are generally skirted or given superficial treatment. For example, "golden rice" is mentioned as a potential mitigator for malnutrition in many parts of the world; but the controversies over its development, distribution, and efficacy in addressing malnutrition are not mentioned (whereas a simple search on the internet brings up a wealth of such information). Addresses regulatory issues relating to the safety of food and human and veterinary drugs that have been, and continue to be, developed through the genetic manipulation of plants, and the animal models used to investigate them. Among the topics are the clinical pharmacology of rDNA agents, drug delivery systems and recombinant proteins, and the biotransformation of xenobiotics. Includes a glossary without pronunciation.
