Children's Literature

This nonfiction reference title is superbly done. The photographs are stunning, and the text is arranged in bite-sized chunks that even the most reluctant of readers can digest. Each two-page spread is jam-packed with facts and activities. The pages look like a field guide, and kids can easily find things they would be interested in reading about just by perusing the eye-catching titles and callouts. The book is written in a conversational style, and each fact, warning, or activity is separated so readers do not become overwhelmed. Despite how broken up the text is, the book is still loaded with information. This book could easily be used to supplement a classroom library, or to help a child write a report about birds. And like any good nonfiction book for kids, there is a detailed table of contents, glossary, and index. There is also a note to parents and teachers at the end that contains wonderful tips for helping a child get more out of the book, as well as interesting websites to direct a child to. This book is very well done. Reviewer: Colleen Kessler
