Overview
Chitham argues that Wuthering Heights was recast and expanded between its first submission to a publisher in 1846 and its final acceptance and publication in late 1847. He suggests that the well-known chronological coherence of the book was an innovation of the second version and explores the anomalies which still remain.

Explores the ways in which Emily Bront<:e> set about the composition of her poetry and novel and discusses the probable contents of her second novel. Provides insight into her mind and working methods, showing that she wrote from direct inspiration and then recast her work under the influence of rational planning. Makes use of new discoveries which show that she had made translation of Virgil and Horace, and examines anomalies and inconsistencies between the version of the novel first submission to a publisher and its final acceptance.
