Karen Leggett - Children's Literature

A young girl and her puppy, Biscuit, spend the day creating special treats for Mom—painting a picture, serving chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, helping in the garden, taking a picnic complete with a bicycle ride and a crown of flowers. Biscuit is always in the center of the action—and also on every flip-open flap at the side of each page. Very young children will enjoy the hide-and-seek nature of these flaps—Biscuit trotting down the hall and under the flap, carrying a newspaper into the bedroom. All of the little girl's comments are in quotes even though the pictures don't show her speaking, but this will probably only be disconcerting to the adult reader. The illustrations are large, simple and full of spring colors. 2004, HarperCollins, Ages 2 to 6.
