Children's Literature

This book prepares children for what it might feel like to sleep away from the comforts of home for the first time. Biscuit and his owner take the essential tools needed to make them feel at home when they visit their sleepover buddies. Biscuit's owner packs dolls, blankets and, of course, Biscuit's dog bone. At the sleepover, Biscuit learns to enjoy special snacks with his friends and listen to special stories. Biscuit breaks a few rules, such as jumping on the bed and tugging on the pillows. In the process, he discovers sleepover etiquette and learns right from wrong. However, when it is time for bed, Biscuit becomes scared and homesick. He attempts to run back home, but his owner reminds him of one thing that always stays the same in this world: the moon. Biscuit decides to give sleeping away from home a second chance. Biscuit's owner also reminds him that when the sleepover is done, they can share sleepover stories with their parents. Finally, Biscuit settles down and goes to sleep. This book could be used as a tool for an activity in social skills with children ranging from ages 2-4. It is recommended because it portrays children as being able to understand and cope with new and sometimes frightful situations on their own. Although the cover art is by the series' original illustrator, Pat Schories, inner illustrations are by Rosemary Berlin in Pat's style. Reviewer: Amy Orr
