Overview

Bleached-blond call girls rarely bring good news, especially the one who bursts through the door of Bay Tanner's struggling inquiry agency and into her already complicated life. Karen Zwilling swears she's been viciously attacked but can'tβ€”or won'tβ€”go to the police.

With the tragedy of her husband's murder finally resolved, Bay has been yearning for a little tranquillity, but that hope is shattered, both by Karen's plea for help and by the unexpected reappearance of aging playboy Win Hammond, scion of an old Beaufort family, who has been missing for more than twenty years. Why has the prodigal son chosen this moment to return, and what will the consequences be for his sister, Bay's beloved Miss Addie? Add to all this a suspected embezzlement by a local businessman and his questionable relationship with his partner, and suddenly Bay and her young associate, Erik Whiteside, find themselves hip-deep in cases and clients.

When a disfigured corpse is discovered on the beach at Hilton Head, Bay's longed-for peace and quiet are irrevocably washed away on the outgoing tide, and suddenly it's clear that no one is who they appear to be, including Bay's former nemesis Ben Wyler. As the pieces finally tumble into place, the shocking resolution may prove as deadly for Bay Tanner as the treacherous waters of Bishop's Reach.

Synopsis

Bay gets her detective agency off the ground when she investigates a man who has been raping women.

Publishers Weekly

Wall's winning sixth Bay Tanner mystery (after 2005's Resurrection Road) finds the Hilton Head, S.C., "inquiry agent" up to her lovely green eyeballs in clients with hidden agendas. When a two-year search by Bay's partner in her PI agency, Erik Whiteside, finally locates the black sheep brother of Miss Addie, an elderly lifelong friend of Bay's family, the brother's return to Hilton Head is the first clue in a tangle of criminal activities and murder. An attractive escort service employee enlists Bay's help to hunt down a rapist, and a Georgia socialite wants to locate her missing Prince Charming. When a badly beaten corpse shows up on the beachfront, the dead man may fit one or both of these bills. Digging deeper whisks Bay into a puzzle that stretches from the mainland to the Virgin Islands and involves both lowlifes and the monied aristocrats. Oozing Southern charm, this whodunit flows like hot molasses to a deliciously clever conclusion. (May) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Running an inquiry business can be interesting, especially when you don't have much experience and need the name of a former homicide detective to make your company legitimate. Former accountant Bay Tanner (Resurrection Road) and her partner, Erik Whiteside, are working a case involving a frequently absent husband when a young escort hires them to find the man who raped her and one of her associates. Then the long-lost brother of one of Bay's closest family friends returns to Hilton Head from the Caribbean, bringing with him danger and a suitcase full of something illegal. The brutally murdered body found on the beach looks like it is that of the rapist, but is it? All the pieces of the disparate investigations eventually come together in a satisfying conclusion. Displaying the same deft hand with characters and plotting that has made this series so outstanding, Wall has written a fast-paced mystery that is a sure bet for summer reading. Wall lives in Hilton Head, SC. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Hilton Head CPA Bay Tanner breaks in her new Inquiry Agency with three-and-a-half cases. Edwin Hollister Hammond III, the black-sheep brother of Adelaide Hammond, has emerged from hiding, though his visit to his moneyed sister can't be good news. Grace Matheson is convinced that her husband Chuck and his partner Cliff Morningside are looting the company they founded, and maybe up to other hanky-panky together as well. Professional escort Karen Zwilling wants Bay to find the client who raped her and one of her colleagues. One of these cases comes to a swift conclusion when police find the body of Randolph Remington Wade, the presumptive rapist, shot to death, his face bashed beyond recognition. But is it really Wade? And if it is, won't Karen be the prime suspect? There's scant time for Bay and her all-but-partner Erik Whiteside (Resurrection Road, 2005, etc.) to puzzle over such questions before her old college roommate, psychiatrist Neddie Halloran, asks her help in tracking down Yancey Sullivan, a druggie pro bono client who's gone AWOL. One of these cases quickly dries up, but the others miraculously turn out to be connected. And if the master criminal conveniently pops up out of nowhere just in time for the rousing climax, there's an undeniable pleasure in watching the Junior League types who people Bay's world mix it up with assorted felonies. Literate, witty, preposterous.
