The son of a ruthless outlaw is faced with the decision of becoming an outlaw in order not to deny his father. Max Brand was one of the pen names used by Frederick Schiller Faust (May 29, 1892 - May 12, 1944). Faust was an American fiction author best known for his thoughtful and literary Westerns. In the 1910's he began selling stories to pulp fiction magazines. His love of mythology is evident in his fiction writings. On his twenty-fifth birthday Terry Colby learned that his father was the notorious outlaw, Black Jack. The moment he rose out of the chair and faced them, Gainor had stopped short. He was quite capable of fast thinking, and now his glance flickered from Terry to the sheriff and back again. It was plain that he had shrewd suspicions as to the purpose behind that call. The sheriff was merely confused. He flushed as much as his tanned-leather skin permitted. As for Terry, the moment his glance fell on the sheriff he felt his muscles jump into hard ridges, and an almost uncontrollable desire to go at the throat of the other seized him. For 25 years, Terry Colby has lived a sheltered life. Raised and cared for by Elizabeth Cornish, Terry has been educated as a gentleman and led to believe that he is the last of the Colbys a fine old Virginia family. But, in truth, Terry is the son of the outlaw Black Jack Hollis. When Hollis was murdered, Elizabeth bet her brother, Vance, that she could raise Hollis's son to be an honest man, that it was the environment and not the blood that determined a man's character. Before the evening of Terry's 25th birthday, Vance sets a series of events in motion that will put Elizabeth's belief in Terry to the test. As usual, Brand's West is peopled with characters from mythology grander and much more eloquent than average dime-novel heroes. Patrick Cullen does an excellent job in his narration of this action-packed adventure. Recommended for all libraries.
