Synopsis

Experience the joy of learning math, science, language skills and more with blocks.

Children's Literature

I was skeptical about this book; really, who needs to learn how to play with blocks? However, the book is written by a teacher about her experiences using blocks to teach a wide range of skills to young children. She gives a specific case study in which a new kindergarten student found blocks very helpful in making a successful transition from home to school. Teachers will find instructions for setting up a block center, analyzing the stages of block play and doing an assessment in the Block Center. Specific activities range from beginning to advanced, including "How many blocks high am I" and building simple machines such as levers and inclined planes. Simple black-and-white illustrations complement the text and provide sufficient detail to complete the activities. 2001, Gryphon House, $19.95. Ages Adult. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
