Overview

As fans of the Vampirates series know, nothing is quite as it seems when Vampirates and pirates are involved, so twins Connor and Grace have to keep up their guards. But with every new challenge pulling them farther apart, it seems that the time has finally come for the twins to explore their separate fates.

Grace, unable to forget the blindness she caused her Vampirate friend Lorcan, chooses to journey with him to see if his sight can be restored. As for Connor, he must endure the latest addition to the Diablo crew: Captain Wrathe's awful nephew, who seems to dislike him from the very start. Will both twins find success, and what will it take to bring them back together?

VOYA

The thrilling pirate and vampire adventure continues in this third installment of a series that began with Demons of the Ocean (Little, Brown, 2006/VOYA December 2006). Grace and Connor are both continuing to fulfill their chosen occupations and fates. Grace embarks on a dangerous mission to a vampire sanctuary to help her Vampirate friend Lorcan regain his sight. They travel to a community of vampires who are being treated by a medicinal guru, Mosh Zu Kamal. Grace begins to study healing, and she becomes involved in the personal stories of many residents. Her peaceful existence is jeopardized by the appearance of the evil vampire, Sidorio. Connor and the crew of the Diablo join Captain Wrathe's brother Barbaro on a mission to avenge the death of his brother. They are going to capture the treasure of the Emperor of the Sunset Fort with an elaborate plan. Connor and the success of the plan are obstructed by the deceit of Barbaro's spoiled son, Moonshine. The haunting characters, both new and from earlier books, are again well rounded and believable, each described with care and an attention to detail that should allow new readers to follow the story. Chapters alternate between Grace and Conner's perspectives, providing a pace that never lets up in this rousing tale of exciting escapades, exotic locations, poems, duels, and treachery. The surprise ending leaves the story open to yet another sequel. Reviewer: Eileen Kuhl
