Overview

Case seen on The Today Show, Dateline, and 60 Minutes II
A Mother's Worst Nightmare

On May 22, 1993, while away from home on a bowling trip, Janet McGinn received the terrifying news that her twelve-year-old daughter Stephanie was missing. After three agonizing days and a massive search, she would learn the heartbreaking truth: Stephanie had been brutally raped and then bludgeoned to death with an axe--her body stuffed into a roadside culvert.

A Stepfather's Sins

Police in Texas' Brown County suspected that they wouldn't have to look far to find her killer. Their suspicions were soon confirmed when traces of blood believed to be Stephanie's were found in a car belonging to the girl's stepfather, Ricky McGinn, 43. The black sheep of a family of preachers and gospel singers, McGinn had previously been convicted of kidnapping, and now detectives had arrived at a horrifying speculation-- that McGinn was also responsible for the unsolved rape-murders of two young women.

A Stay Of Execution

Found guilty of Stephanie's murder, McGinn was sentenced to death. But on June 1, 2000, 18 minutes before execution time, he received a postponement ordered by then-Texas governor George W. Bush. The reprieve had been granted so that McGinn's DNA could be tested against that found at the crime scene. It took four nerve-wracking months to prove conclusively that McGinn was the killer, and on September 27, 2000, this monstrous child-killer finally kept his date with the executioner.
