Who could imagine there might be bad blood between Arkansans David Farr and Robert Davis Prescott? Both were of humble origins. David was the son of a state trooper, but Prescott was groomed from boyhood by shadowy political interests to rise to the nation's highest office. David is driven to find and punish the wrong-doers when years later his beloved son Zack is stricken with AIDS from a transfusion of tainted blood in Canada. To his astonishment, his quest for vengeance leads him back to Arkansas and then to the White House. He and Prescott have never met, yet the dreadful logic of tragedy inevitably draws them closer and closer, through episodes of tender love, sheer terror and violent death.
