Eichberg, a well-known scholar in continental Europe who draws upon the ideas of Elias, Focault, Habermas and others, is now attracting considerable interest from Anglo-American sociologists, historians and geographers. This collection has been extensively edited to highlight Eichberg's most important arguments and themes. Booknews
A collection of seven essays by Eichberg, a cultural sociologist in Denmark, aimed at readers in the fields of social sciences and humanities. The first two essays are concerned with the body in space and were chosen to illustrate aspects of what Eichberg claims about the `territorialisation' of the human body. The next two essays tackle bodies, cultures, and identities and relate body cultural practices to national or cultural identities. The concluding three papers point towards a new paradigm in studies of the sporting human body and of the sporting cultural landscape. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
