From The Critics

Reviewer: Anita Nelson Niehues, MS, OTR/L(Univ of Illinois at Chicago Coll of Associated Health Professions)
Description: Four authors contributed to this book that presents body image, visual-perceptual, and somesthetic discrimination deficits across a variety of clinical diagnoses. It is oriented toward assessment and research and the link between these deficits and occupational performance.
Purpose: The book's stated purpose is to stimulate experienced health professionals to precisely observe, evaluate, and research perceptual and body image dysfunction relative to patients' work, leisure, and daily living needs.
Audience: It is written for experienced health professionals with an interest in research. Undergraduate students might find it helpful in outlining areas needing further research in adult perceptual dysfunction.
Features: This attractive book is organized into two parts: Perceptual Dysfunction and Body Image Dysfunction. Each section introduces a diagnostic category, presents formal and informal assessments and research relating to treatment, and concludes with perceived needs for further research. Line drawings and tables are used infrequently for illustration. Information is easily accessed through the table of contents or the index and a short, but adequate, glossary is included.
Assessment: This book is a scholarly review of the literature and available assessment tools utilized with adults with a variety of perceptual dysfunctions and needs for rehabilitation. It accurately presents the need for continuing research linking perceptual dysfunction and occupational performance.
