Overview

Body Structures and Function, 11th Edition introduces the basics required for the study of the human body and how it functions in a clear and concise manner. Updated to remain relevant, the text takes the learner from a general introduction to life functions, the terminology used to describe body parts and their locations, to an overall review of human development and body processes. The text begins by reviewing relevant aspects of Chemistry, and discusses basic cell functions, as well as abnormal conditions. Body Structures and Function, 11th Edition, then advances to discuss specific body structures and systems, highlighting disorders of the system, effects of aging and career profiles. Each chapter features Key Objectives, words, medical terminology, lab activities, and a section focused on Applying Theory to Practice and Case Studies. The text is accompanied by a student workbook and StudyWARETM CD-ROM that offer additional practice through interactive quizzes and fun activities that correlate with each chapter in the text.

This book contains predominantly color illustrations, with some black-and-white illustrations.

Reviewer:Steven K. Hamick, BIS, RCP, RRT, AE-C(William Beaumont Hospitals)
Description:This update of an entry-level anatomy and physiology textbook has several unique features. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose:According to the authors, this book and its associated teaching materials are designed to facilitate learning of anatomy and physiology. Given the perpetual evolution of understanding of the human body and disease, this revised edition is needed.
Audience:Although not specifically stated, the book is intended for entry-level healthcare students who are studying anatomy and physiology. It is written in such an easy-to-understand style that high school students and laypersons would find it a useful resource.
Features:Interestingly, the book begins with tips on how to study the material and how to use the accompanying Studyware CD. A short prologue explaining the history of anatomy and physiology follows, which segues into the material on body-systems anatomy. Each chapter begins with a list of objectives and key words and continues with main headings and subheadings. All new terms are bolded upon first encounter and illustrations, photographs, and tables provide visuals. New for this edition are the Did You Know? boxes which contain interesting facts on the chapter topic and Effects of Aging boxes that highlight age-associated changes with the body systems. In addition, each chapter contains case studies, medical terminology review, career profiles of various healthcare disciplines, medical highlights, review questions, lab activities, and more. Two appendixes of metric conversion tables and an explanation of the scientific method are followed by a nice glossary of terms, the index, and the accompanying CD.
Assessment:This is a well-organized book. Not only will entry level healthcare students enjoy the text, but laypersons will as well.
