School Library Journal

Gr 5-7-War Correspondents emphasizes the dangers faced by those undertaking this career. The first three out of four photographs are of journalists who were either killed or harmed during the course of their work. Education, hard work, and knowledge of world events are also stressed. In Bodyguards, the author mixes a hodgepodge of celebrity photos, secret-service responsibilities, and post-9/11 terrorism with "security engineer" paraphernalia. The resulting work gives little insight into the daily routine of a bodyguard. In Arctic Scientists, the emphasis is on the physical discomforts suffered by those working at the Arctic Circle. There are several, nearly identical photographs of parka-clad men boring through the ice, as well as an extensive discussion of the dangers of polar bears. However, there is some mention of the educational requirements to become a scientist and the need to work hard in order to succeed. The bibliographies in Bodyguards and Arctic Scientists list mostly online materials.-Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
