Overview
Formed in 1916, No. 57 Squadron saw frontline action in France during World War I, including some one-sided combat with the Red Baron. During World War II it fought with Bomber Command in most of the key raids of the bomber offensive, alongside its sister squadron No. 630. In the post-war era No. 57 Squadron has remained active, notably in the Falklands conflict when its Vicot tankers provided a vital air-to-air refuelling capability.Incorporating anecdotal material from former squadron members, this lively narrative history is fully illustrated and supported by a series of detailed appendices.

"I change my body but not my spirit" is the motto of No. 57 Squadron, one of the few units in RAF history to have seen almost continuous service since its formation in the First World War. The author, a former flight engineer, draws from selected official and private documentary sources to provide a detailed history of the squadron from its beginning in the days of the Royal Flying Corps, through the formation in World War II of its companion squadron, No. 630, to the present. He describes not only the squadron's change in role over nearly 80 years from fighter-reconnaissance, to bomber, to airborne tanker, but also the month-by-month successes and sacrifices of squadron members and the crucial contributions of the ground crew.
