Overview

This second edition of the Bone Mechanics Handbook summarizes the current understanding of bone mechanics with comprehensive coverage of the histology, physiology, and the cell and molecular biology of the bone. It is updated with the most recent advances on mechanical properties of the bone, most notably of cancellous bone, and the streaming potentials in the bone, which reflect the realization of the importance of fluid movement in bone tissue.

Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Riad Barmada, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book on bone mechanics includes up-to-date information on bone morphology, physiology, and mechanical properties, as well as recently used research techniques that yielded a wealth of new information on this topic. The previous edition was published in 1989.
Purpose: "The purpose is to present information on bone mechanics not available when the first edition was published. "
Audience: Scientists, physicians, and trainees involved in research related to bones are the audience.
Features: "Bone morphology, physiology, and mechanical properties are covered. Research techniques, including molecular biology techniques, are outlined. The references are extensive and would be extremely useful to researchers interested in bone mechanics, function, and physiology. This is an excellent publication on the subject. There is new information in this edition on such topics as the flow bone fluids, technique to measure skeletal gene function, molecular testing of bone cells, and design manufacturing of bone replacement scaffolds. Also, there is a brief description of recent research techniques that have provided a great deal of data in these areas. "
Assessment: "This is an outstanding publication that provides up-to-date data on bone structure and function. The information presented in this book is a review of hundreds of published papers and articles. In my opinion this book will be of great benefit to researchers, residents, and physicians interested in bone research and bone disease. "

Booknews

New edition of a handbook that summarizes the current understanding of bone mechanics and reflects the extraordinary progress in the field, such as advances on the mechanical properties (most notably of cancellous bone) which reflect the importance of fluid movement in bone tissue. Cowin (The City College of New York) presents 36 contributions that discuss basic biology, techniques from mechanics and imaging, mechanical and architectural properties of bone, flow of fluids in bone, bone adaptation, and clinically related issues.
