Publishers Weekly

Halloween-ready kids sport their spooky attire in this guess-the-costume, foldout board book. Rhyming descriptions offer clues about the disguises, as more of each image is revealed by lifting flaps. On one page, a girl's arm is outstretched, cloaked in a black, spidery dress: “I ride my broom through the October sky and cackle at the moon that's hanging high.” Folding the page up reveals “Boo! I'm a...” and a final flip to the left shows the full picture. The excited expressions of the kids in costume should get readers in the mood for trick or treating. Ages 3–5. (Aug.)

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Halloween offers kids a chance to have fun. This book is a foldout Halloween adventure. Each of the spreads opens up into a four-page square. The first one offers a textual clue as to what the creatures might be and puts out the costume picked out on the left-hand side of the page. The third panel says "Boo! I'm a..." and now kids are supposed to guess what lifting the final flap will reveal. The monsters are all smiling kids dressed in costumes. They are all attractive and represent a number of ethnic groups of both genders. The book might be a big help notice about answering that doorbell on Halloween night. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
