Born a slave, Booker overcame incredible hardships to educate himself. Not only did he learn, he became an excellent student at Hampton Institute in Virginia and rose to the position of teacher. Then he was asked to become the principal at a new school in Tuskegee, Alabama. He did and it grew into famous center for blacks to get an education. Booker died in 1915 while he was still president. Easy to read and well illustrated book that is part of the "First Biographies" series.
