Synopsis

This easy-to-read ghost story is just the thing for future mystery lovers. Mr. Brown has a bookstore full of spooky ghost books. But even though he has a cat, he also has mice in his store. No customers will come in, and Mr. Brown gives his cat an order: Get rid of the mice or else. Mr. Brown s ingenious and kindhearted cat comes up with a spectacular plan that just might work with a little help from some ghost-mice. The text in this funny mystery is lively, and the big, full-color pictures by popular illustrator Nadine Bernard Westcott are sweetly amusing and sly. For Halloween or any time, this is a great beginning reader for kids who love ghost stories. Barbara Maitland is the author of The Bear Who Didn t Like Honey. Nadine Bernard Westcott is the creator of over thirty picture books; she also designs a popular line of greeting cards.

Children's Literature

Mr. Brown, who sells ghost books, befriends a black cat, who, contrary to her new master's wishes, befriends rather than terrorizes the in-store mice. The customers, though, don't share the cat's mouse-friendly feelings and refuse to enter the store, which is rapidly losing business and may be forced to close. But the clever cat comes up with a plan whereby the store acquires a sales-enhancing, cheese-eating ghost and Mr. Brown becomes good friends with the cat's rodent buddies. The plot twists and hint of mystery should enthrall young readers right to the satisfying ending. Nadine Bernard Westcott's playful illustrations capture the personalities of all main characters: human, cat, and mice.
